Commonwealth Human Rights
e-Alert: Second Issue
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This e-alert has been produced for Commonwealth National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) by the British Council, as part of the British Council's project to support networking and sharing between such NHRIs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Human Trafficking across the Commonwealth
--------------------------------------------------------Kofi Annan had stated:"Despite the actions taken at the national, regional and international levels on the issue of trafficking in persons, particularly in women and girls, and on sexual exploitation of women and girls, there is still much to be done by governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), civil society and academic institutions...Measures to discourage traffickers should be introduced and victims of trafficking should be protected and assisted, including through the provision of legal and physical assistance, as well as health care." (United Nations Report by Secretary-General, August 2002)
Trafficking is the fastest growing form of modern slavery, affecting every continent in the world. Approximately 800,000- 900,000 people annually are trafficked across international borders world-wide.(Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000: Trafficking in Persons Report 2003 by the U.S. Department of State).
This e-alert is an attempt to bring together online resources on the issue of Human Trafficking across the Commonwealth.
