British Council is UK's international organisation for educational and
cultural relations and manages a wide range of activities covering the arts,
science, technology and education. Through our work we aim to build and
develop long-term relationships with governments, organisations and people
to provide mutual benefit and promote a wider knowledge of the UK and the
English language. All jobs in the organisation contribute towards these
aims. All our work is concerned with people and involves quality and
customer care.
In India, the Council operates as a division of the British High Commission.
With offices in the four metros (New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai) and
a network of seven British libraries, this is the Council's largest
operation in the world.
You will be encouraged to manage
your own career. Most vacant jobs are initially advertised internally and
all staff are eligible to apply. Whatever your area and level of work, a job
in the British Council is a unique opportunity to develop highly
transferable skills which will serve you well even if you aim to move out of
the organisation in due course.
Successful candidates are offered
appointment on a fixed-term contract. The duration of contract is determined
by the nature of the job to be filled. All offers of appointment are subject
to satisfactory references and medical clearance.
Our staff work a five-day week of forty hours
(including lunch break).
The British Council is committed to a policy
of equal opportunity. Our policy aims to ensure that no job applicant or
employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of sex, marital
status, race, colour, creed, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age or
disability.
British Council has a fundamental duty of care towards all children we
engage with including a duty to protect them from abuse (Abuse falls into four
categories: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect). In the
context of our work, child protection therefore means putting in all reasonable
measures in our activity planning and work practices to protect children engaging
in British Council activities from abuse. We believe in establishing a child safe
environment one that has a careful and thorough staff selection process, child
friendly policies, clear guidelines and management systems in place.
We have a code of conduct which all members of staff are required to
follow. The code states the key standards of behaviour expected from members
of staff and from others acting on behalf of the British Council, in order
to preserve and enhance its reputation.
