    Abstract

Language learning is essentially a matter of acquiring the important skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in an integrated manner and harnessing these skills to the performance of formal as well as informal communication tasks.’ NCF (2005)

The Delhi Teacher Development Cascade Programme is the result of a three-way partnership between the Directorate of Education (DoE), Government of NCT of Delhi, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and the British Council. The programme aims to improve teacher’s confidence in using English and child-centred methodology so as to achieve the effective implementation of the objectives of National Curriculum Framework (2005) in government schools of Delhi.

Since the project started in July 2008, we have achieved the following:

A strong resource pool of 388 master trainers from DoE trained
10 day training module designed which includes teacher and master trainer versions
89 Principals/ HoS of DoE oriented as mentors
DoE teachers filmed teaching students in DoE classrooms and a series of 10 films edited and embedded in training modules
2 day refresher training for all master trainers
3,400 teachers of DoE trained by master trainers

In this session, a number of mentors, master trainers and teachers will share innovations that have helped them to overcome specific challenges during the implementation of the programme and have enabled them to provide an input rich and interactive learning environment for their students.
